Well, we all know that there is a plethora of challenges in everyday life for a common Pakistani; rest the Youth, who still has to decide the course of their life.
To achieve success one need to improvise two things i.e. the mindset and the skillset. This post focusses on building the right mindset, which is much more important than the skillset. As there’s a saying:
The first that thing I want you to realize is that to not to set your goals by just by following others. Nor you should set goals by merely listening to everyday social chatter. To be a successful person, you need to understand everything in life, every word & every concept from its root and in its original sense. You need to build your own perspective & vision. You need to realize & understand yourself, you need to know you, you need to decide & know what you want in the end!
In this life long journey of self-realization, the first thing that you need to decide is to define Success for you. There is no single/universal definition of Success. At an early age, one tends to think that by earning more money or by gaining power or social influence, one can be successful. Believe me it is nothing more than a myth. There are number of stories, even from the richest societies, that money & power cannot bring “ultimate happiness” and “satisfaction”. Success is something bigger than both of these.
Let’s take the case of Wikipedia as an example. Wikipedia is accessed my millions of people [around 483 million unique visitors (per month) ] and the total operating budget for the 2012-13 plan called for $42.1 million in spending. But you will be surprised to know that the Founder of Wikipedia, does not earn a dime from this project. To Quote from Wikipedia Founder, Jimmy Wales:
I will write later on this point that more money, fame or power is not an answer to all the challenges in life. But you should take my word for now and let’s move on.
What I want you to realize at this point is that although “more money” solves many problems and earns you respect & luxury (or easiness) in life (and these are certainly good things to have) – but you should not set it as an end goal in your life. To earn a suitable and respectable living can be one of our initial goals in life but not the ultimate success point. You need to remember this advice not only today but tomorrow when you will have money, that this is not an end!
I am stressing this because most people get stuck in a loop of their high paying jobs and/or businesses and they forget to create a more lasting Success.
So the first step towards a Successful life is to think & define success, vision your life beyond immediate monetary gains & to pursue your passion and talent.
The next important step is that you need to make your own Career (or professional) choices. In Pakistan, especially, there is a copycat mindset. Sometimes it’s IT/Tech other times it’s Engineering, Medical, ACCA, CA, MBA or whatever. Whenever we hear a success story or two, we immediately adopt that track, desperately hoping for a silver bullet success solution.
Now this is a disaster….
We do not think about our skills, talent, passion or anything about ourselves, we blindly start imitating others. We think our Success lies in following others, by copying others. We need to know that God has created each one of us unique, so we must possess some unique talent, we just do not know it yet. We need to give some time to ourselves to groom. We need to give some time to ourselves to groom. We must let our inner self to unleash itself, otherwise all we will have in the end will be a miserable innerself, and we will never feel happy or satisfied. If we look around ourselves most people are unhappy or unsatisfied, even if they are earning well, this is only because they are not living a life by their own on choice.
So we need to break ourselves from a panic mode, never make hasty decisions (based on imitating others), never feel desperate (you are too young to feel desperate!), never make decisions from a defeated mindset! Give yourself time and explore your innerself. (i.e. Your talents, skills & passion)
So far I have shared with you two important conclusions i.e. do not blindly pursue monetary goals & explore your innerself. There is no end to the number of advices you can get on living a life, but if you start following these two, you will be better than the most.
Upcoming: In the next post I will share with you the skillset that lead to success in Pakistan.
P.S. Here is a short urdu article about importance of working in Pakistan.
